A Russian drone struck a six-storey residential building in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district on the morning of 2 September, causing a partial collapse and damaging a nearby medical facility and an educational institution, according to city officials. No casualties have been reported as of the latest update.

The attack unfolded amid a broader wave of drone attacks on the capital. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported at around 08:00 that debris from a drone had sparked a fire in the open in the Holosiivskyi district. Later, at 10:54, he confirmed that a UAV had hit a six-storey building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, leading to a partial collapse of the structure.

"Part of a six-storey residential building has collapsed in the Shevchenkivskyi district after being hit by a UAV. A fire has also broken out in a three-storey building nearby. Fire and rescue crews are at the scene," Klitschko said in a statement, as reported by Ukrainska Pravda.

The Kyiv City Military Administration added that, in addition to the residential damage, a fire broke out on the premises of an educational institution in the Holosiivskyi district, while a medical facility in the Shevchenkivskyi district was also damaged. Emergency crews contained the fire in the adjacent three-storey building, but the extent of the damage to the medical and educational facilities has not yet been fully assessed.

The strike is the latest in a series of Russian drone and missile attacks targeting Kyiv's civilian infrastructure. The Shevchenkivskyi district, a densely populated area in the city centre, has been hit repeatedly since the start of the full-scale invasion. The partial collapse of a multi-storey apartment block underscores the risk to residents even when air defences intercept some threats — in this case, the drone struck directly, causing structural failure.

Military analysts note that the use of one-way attack drones allows Russian forces to pressure Ukrainian air defences and probe for gaps, often striking residential areas when defences are overwhelmed or when drones evade interception. The lack of casualties in this instance may be due to the timing of the strike — mid-morning, when many residents were already out — but the damage to a medical facility and a school raises concerns about the broader impact on essential services.

Ukrainska Pravda, citing the Kyiv City Military Administration, reported that the educational institution affected was not specified, but the fire in the Holosiivskyi district suggests that the attacks were coordinated across multiple districts. The Shevchenkivskyi district is home to several hospitals and clinics, and the damage to a medical facility could hinder healthcare access for residents already strained by the war.

No official casualty figures have been released, and rescue operations continue. The Kyiv City Military Administration has urged residents to remain in shelters during air alerts and to report any drone debris sightings to emergency services.

This attack comes as Ukraine continues to face nightly drone and missile barrages, with Russian forces targeting both military and civilian infrastructure. The partial collapse of a residential building in central Kyiv is a stark reminder of the war's enduring toll on urban life, even as the front lines remain hundreds of kilometres away.
