Pakistan Mediation in Iran War Hits Progress but Tehran's Military Rift Remains, Strait of Hormuz Standoff Drags On
Pakistan's army chief reports progress in mediating an end to the US-Israel war on Iran, but Tehran's military leadership remains skeptical. The US warns against new mines in the Strait of Hormuz as Iran insists the waterway is still closed, and a US Air Force major faces charges for publicly calling for Trump's impeachment over the war.
Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, wrapped up a daylong diplomatic mission to Tehran on August 25, 2026, claiming “significant progress” in talks to end the US-Israel war on Iran. But the real test of mediation lies in bridging a widening gap between Iran’s civilian president and its military commanders – a gap that remains wide open.
Munir, accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, shuttled between meetings with President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei, according to a Pakistani military statement (Source: Al Jazeera). The talks focused on “preventing further escalation, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and expedited termination of the conflict,” the statement said.
Naqvi later posted on X that both sides reviewed the “Islamabad MoU” – an interim framework mediated by Pakistan to end the war – and that Pezeshkian had shared Iran’s concerns “openly.” He called the meeting’s conclusion “highly positive” and said the momentum could “pave the way for further progress” (Source: Al Jazeera).
Yet the core obstacle Munir must overcome is not in Pezeshkian’s office but inside Iran’s military command. Days before the visit, Pezeshkian told a gathering of doctors that “it is better that we bring the war to an end now as we are in a position of power and dignity.” Hours later, the chief of the general staff of Iran’s armed forces, Major-General Ali Abdollahi, promised “revolutionary, crushing, regret-inducing and devastating” responses to any American miscalculation (Source: Al Jazeera). Analysts quoted by Al Jazeera say Munir’s most crucial meeting on Monday may have been with General Mohsen Rezaei, a representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader, whose office holds ultimate authority over the military.
Separately, the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz – a chokepoint for global oil shipments – continues. On August 26, US President Donald Trump stated that all mines had been cleared from the strait’s international waters and warned that any ship laying new mines would be “destroyed.” Iran, however, insists the waterway remains closed despite a reported route deal with Oman (Source: Al Jazeera). The contradiction underscores the fragility of any diplomatic breakthrough.
Meanwhile, dissent inside the US military over the war has surfaced in rare form. US Air Force Major Jason Watson faces charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice for publicly calling for the impeachment of President Trump and Vice President JD Vance over the war. Watson was detained in July after holding a sign on the steps of the US Capitol. His lawyer, Christopher Mutimer, said Watson “acted knowing the risks to his career and his liberty” and hoped his client’s stand would give courage to other Americans (Source: Al Jazeera).
With the war now in its sixth month and no end in sight, Pakistan’s mediation effort remains one of the few diplomatic channels open. But as long as Tehran’s military leadership – and the Strait of Hormuz – remain in the hands of those who see negotiation as weakness, the path to peace remains blocked.
