Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities continued overnight on 26-27 August, with strikes recorded in Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and debris falling in Kyiv. At least eight civilians were injured, including a 10-year-old boy in Kherson and a 30-year-old man in Kharkiv.

Kharkiv: drone hits residential balcony

In Kharkiv's Industrialnyi District, a Russian drone struck the balcony of a third-floor apartment in a high-rise residential building overnight, Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Oblast Military Administration, reported on social media. A 30-year-old man suffered shock and was treated by medics at the scene, according to Syniehubov. The strike is part of a pattern of Russian forces targeting residential areas in Kharkiv, a city that has been under near-daily bombardment since the full-scale invasion began.

Kherson: child among four wounded in evening drone attacks

In Kherson, two separate drone attacks on the evening of 26 August left four people injured, the Kherson Oblast Military Administration said. At around 18:30, a drone struck the Dniprovskyi district, injuring a 19-year-old woman and two men aged 34 and 33, all of whom sustained blast injuries. Later, at approximately 20:10, a drone hit a car in the Korabelnyi district, wounding a 10-year-old boy. The boy suffered a blast injury and cuts to his head and back, and was hospitalised in moderate condition, according to the administration. Kherson, a southern city that was occupied by Russian forces early in the war and later liberated by Ukraine in November 2022, remains under constant fire from Russian positions on the east bank of the Dnipro River.

Zaporizhzhia: three injured overnight

Russian forces also struck Zaporizhzhia on the night of 26-27 August, injuring three people, according to reports cited by the Kyiv City Military Administration. No further details on the condition of the injured were immediately available.

Kyiv: drone debris falls near school and residential building

In the early hours of 27 August, debris from downed drones fell in two districts of Kyiv. In the Podilskyi district, debris landed in the courtyard of a residential building, the Kyiv City Military Administration reported. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, debris fell on the grounds of an educational institution. The administration stated that information regarding casualties and damage was being confirmed, according to the source. Kyiv has been targeted by Iranian-designed Shahed drones and cruise missiles throughout the war, with Ukrainian air defences intercepting most but not all incoming threats.

Strategic context

The attacks come as Ukraine continues to press its summer counteroffensive in the south and east, while Russian forces have escalated strikes on civilian infrastructure and residential areas in an apparent effort to demoralise the population and disrupt daily life. The targeting of schools and residential buildings, even with falling debris from intercepted drones, underscores the indiscriminate nature of the campaign. Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly called on Western partners to provide more air defence systems, particularly to protect cities like Kharkiv and Kherson that lie close to the front line.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Ukrainian officials routinely attribute such strikes to the Russian military. Moscow denies targeting civilians, though evidence of systematic attacks on residential areas has been documented by international organisations and media.
