Russian Drone Strikes Injure Two in Kyiv Oblast as Wave of Jet-Powered Attacks Continues

A morning drone attack on Kyiv Oblast on 2 September injured two people and damaged warehouses. The strike is part of a five-day wave in which Russia has launched 800 jet-powered drones across Ukraine, killing civilians and straining defences.

A Russian drone attack on the morning of 2 September struck three districts of Kyiv Oblast, injuring two people and causing fires at warehouses and damage to residential buildings, regional officials reported.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration, said a man in the Bucha district suffered a shrapnel wound to his thigh and a woman in the Brovary district sustained wounds to her arm and shoulder. Both received medical attention. This attack is part of a sustained campaign of Russian drone strikes that has intensified since late August. On 1 September, a daytime UAV attack on Kyiv set fire to a 16-storey building in the Podilskyi district, with flames on the 13th and 14th floors, and a drone fell near a residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on 31 August that Russia had fired approximately 1,500 drones of all types into Ukraine over the previous four days, about 800 of them jet-powered. The faster models — with a cruising speed of 200–250 mph — are roughly twice as fast as the piston-engine Shahed variants and beyond the speed of Ukraine’s cheap interceptors, forcing Kyiv to rely on combat aircraft to shoot them down Source: The Guardian, 31 Aug.

Earlier in the week, the toll on civilians mounted. On 30 August, a Russian airstrike with two FAB-250 bombs hit the settlement of Bylbasivka in Donetsk Oblast, killing two people — including a 13-year-old child — and injuring two others, according to Sloviansk City Military Administration head Vadym Liakh Source: Ukrainska Pravda, 30 Aug. Odesa Oblast also came under a large-scale combined attack on the night of 31 August–1 September, damaging two residential buildings, a sewing workshop, and the international ferry border crossing at Orlivka, with one person injured Source: Ukrainska Pravda, 1 Sept.

The pattern of daytime drone raids — previously rare — has forced businesses to halt operations and residents to spend hours in shelters. Emergency services are often compelled to leave attack sites when another drone is inbound, worsening the impact of fires caused by hits. The Kremlin has targeted warehouses around Kyiv in recent weeks, a response, Kyiv says, to Ukrainian strikes on Russian e-commerce distribution centres.

The 2 September attack in Kyiv Oblast is the latest in a series that shows no sign of abating. Ukrainian air defence units continue to engage the new jet-powered drones, but their speed and numbers are stretching the country’s resources.
