Russian jet-powered drones strike Kyiv for third time in week, sparking fires across three districts
Russian forces attacked Kyiv with jet-powered UAVs on 1 September, causing fires in three districts. The strike follows a week of intensifying drone attacks targeting logistics hubs and civilian areas, killing one and damaging warehouses.
Russian forces attacked Kyiv with jet-powered UAVs on the evening of 1 September, marking the third major drone assault on the capital in less than a week. Ukrainian air defence engaged the incoming drones, but debris fell in three districts, igniting fires, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
“In the Holosiivskyi district, UAV wreckage fell in an open area, causing a fire. A fire also broke out at a house in the Solomianskyi district,” Klitschko said on Telegram. He added that a fire in an open area near houses in the Sviatoshynskyi district was also reported. Emergency services are working to contain the blazes. The 1 September attack follows a pattern of intensifying Russian drone strikes that have shifted from overnight raids to daylight and evening operations. Just two days earlier, on 30 August, a daytime drone attack damaged a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district and the façade of a café in Holosiivskyi district. No one was hurt in that attack Source: Ukrainska Pravda.
The most lethal incident in this series occurred on the morning of 28 August, when a strike killed one person and injured two others in the Bucha and Fastiv districts of Kyiv Oblast. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration, reported that civilian infrastructure was damaged across five districts, including 14 warehouses, 16 houses, three apartment buildings and 16 vehicles Source: Ukrainska Pravda. That night, a Russian drone destroyed a Nova Poshta sorting hub in Sviatopetrivske, and a second strike hit the same location while firefighters were tackling the blaze – a tactic known as a double-tap attack. The scale of the Russian effort became clear on 27 August, when Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched approximately 140 attack drones during the day, more than 100 of them jet-powered, with the majority directed at Kyiv. Air defence shot down or jammed about 120 of them Source: Ukrainska Pravda. Despite the interception rate, debris caused damage in the Holosiivskyi and Pecherskyi districts, setting a car on fire and damaging a sport facility near Lobanovskyi Stadium Source: Ukrainska Pravda.
Moscow’s targeting has also focused on logistics and distribution centres. On 27 August, the distribution centre of electronics retailer Comfy in Kyiv Oblast was hit, though no employees were injured thanks to pre-prepared shelters Source: Ukrainska Pravda. The same day, the Aurora multimarket chain lost another distribution centre – the second such attack in less than a week, following a strike on 22 August in Poltava Oblast Source: Ukrainska Pravda.
The repeated strikes on commercial hubs suggest a deliberate Russian strategy to disrupt supply chains and weaken Ukraine’s economy, as noted in previous coverage on this desk. The use of jet-powered drones – likely modified Shahed-136s or newer variants – allows faster approach speeds and more erratic flight paths, complicating air defence responses.
As of the evening of 1 September, Kyiv’s air-raid warnings have become a near-daily routine. The city’s resilience is being tested not only by the frequency of attacks but by the expanding geography of strikes, which now hit both residential and industrial areas across multiple districts.
Authorities continue to urge residents to heed warnings and stay in shelter. The full extent of damage from the 1 September attack is still being assessed.
